FIFA meets to decide on U-17 World Cup host by Nigeria

Nigeria's readiness for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, to be held in November 2009, is one of the issues the world soccer governing body FIFA will consider at its two-day meeting next week.

Reports from the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday 15th March, the meeting, which is slated on Thursday and Friday, will hold at FIFA's headquarters in Zurich.

A statement on the Media Channel of FIFA said the meeting would also get an update on the preparations for the Confederations Cup in South Africa in June 2009 and the 2010 World Cup.

The statement said there will also be briefings on preparations for other FIFA-organized events for the year.

Some of the events to be be discussed on are the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Egypt 2009; the FIFA Club World Cup, Abu Dhabi 2009; and the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, Dubai 2009.

The meeting would also deliberate on Olympic Football Tournaments, and take the presentation of the 2008 FIFA Financial Report, the statement said.

It added that there would be discussions on measures adopted to protect minors in football, while pending cases against member associations would be reviewed.

Nigeria's FIFA Executive Committee member, Amos Adamu, was mandated to report to the world soccer body weekly on the status of facilities for the Under-17 championship.

The executive committee meeting's deliberations are expected to cover the findings of the FIFA inspection team, led by FIFA Vice-President, Jack Warner.

The delegation inspected facilities in nine cities in January and declared that only Abuja and Ijebu Ode were ready, while the rest were given till April to complete the installation of the facilities.

Other cities bidding to host the junior competition are Lagos, Calabar, Kaduna, Bauchi, Kano, Enugu and Warri.

Six of the nine cities are expected to be picked at a press conference after the meeting on Friday to mark the end of the deliberations.
